Foundation implements ELEVATE program
ELEVATE is a curriculum that was developed by Nathan Mellor of the Academy of Sports & Character, which is a division of Strata Leadership, LLC. The program is designed for coaches to discuss, recognize and reward positive character traits in their athletes. The Wes Welker Foundation began funding the program in its inaugural year in all middle schools and high schools in the OKC Public School District. The curriculum covers 40 values, including compassion, patience, teamwork and loyalty that are designed to be taught over a four year period.
The overriding concept used to develop the program is that many athletes are competent, but lack character and that Character (C1) + Competence (C2) = Consistency (C3). Coaches give weekly C3 awards to those deserving athletes, who have displayed the weekly characteristic. At the completion of the season, each athlete is given a certificate, honoring him or her with a Distinguished Character Award, citing an example when he or she displayed one of the traits.
